The board held a budget work session.
The tax increase that would be necessary should the $44 million school bond issue pass in the upcoming November 5, 2024 election is unknown. Tax Assessor Leroy Ware suggested it might increase property taxes by $100 on a $100,000 home for the next 30 years. The board members want the school bond lawyer and the school board to provide more details before they set the budget.
Mr. Ware also suggested shutting down the Juvenile Detention facility to save the county a net amount of $1 million per year. He stated that they could house the juveniles in other facilities outside the county for $400,000 per year. He also described possible plans to build a "regional" facility, but that would require a change in state law. The current building requires large expenditures to make it usable. Right now, the facility has around 20 full time employees, but can only house a handful of juveniles.
