10 shot, 2 killed in overnight Greenwood shooting rampage

Sunday, October 25, 2020, 2:44 pm News Flash Archive

Saturday evening around 10:45 pm, at least 10 people were shot, and two killed near the corner of Martin Luther King Drive and Main Street in Greenwood.

Photojournalist Andy Lo was on the scene soon after the shootings and live streamed video of the first responders on site. His video showed numerous Greenwood Police and Leflore County Sheriff's vehicles, as well as ambulances from Pafford and Med-stat loading patients for transport.

Greenwood Leflore Carroll County Crimestoppers posted a request for tips at 2:30 this morning, not mentioning the deaths. But later at 8:40 this morning, Crimestoppers added confirmation of the two deaths to its post.

A family member who was present during the shooting reported the following on Facebook:

Last night, following the burial of my grandmother, my family reunited outside at a family member's home .... During this time, an unknown assailant in a black hoodie decided to ambush the home unloading an automatic rifle. There were numerous children and adults outside. Unfortunately, 10 or 11 family members were shot and/or grazed.... Of the 11 injured, 2 have died (siblings). Pray for us, as many are traumatized from screaming children, gallons of los[t] blood, a lack of ambulances, and having to perform CPR.

The family member praised the staff at Greenwood Leflore Hospital for their work stabilizing the victims and getting them off to Jackson for surgery.

So far, there are no reports of whether the shooter has been apprehended.

Gerard Edic of the Greenwood Commonwealth reports that the two dead victims are Jonathan and Katrina Pitts, who had traveled from Chicago to attend the funeral.
