The Board voted to provide additional pay to Dr. June Leigh, director of curriculum and instruction. Board member Kathy Whicker objected, saying the extra pay was not necessary. Dr. Montrell Greene discussed plans for reading remediation to try to lower the 26% failure rate of 3rd graders' reading performance. He also presented the results of a survey that indicated broad satisfaction among parents regarding the safety and running of the school system. He predicted that the graduation rate would rise from 65% to 71%, but that more progress was needed.
