At this afternoon's city council meeting, the council rejected Mayor McAdams' nominee for school board, Samantha Milton.
Mr. Jennings and Mrs. Cookston voted to confirm the appointment, Mr. Stevenson abstained, and Messrs. Jordan, Cannon, McCoy and Palmer voted against the appointment.
Several council members had expressed their desire that Margaret Clark be reappointed to the school board. Mrs. Clark, who has served a decade on the board, owed tens of thousands of dollars in overdue property taxes at the beginning of this year. In addition, she declared bankruptcy in 2003 earlier during her membership on the school board.
The Mayor's nominee, Mrs. Milton is currently in chapter 13 bankruptcy, having filed her petition in March of last year. She and her husband declared around $50,000 in credit card debt, as well as a hefty home mortgage to Countrywide and another $50,000 in student loans.
It appears that our city leaders cannot bring themselves to appoint financially competent people to run our $28 million per year city school system.
