Carroll County Sheriff sued over shooting

Twin lawsuits were filed on December 21, 2011 against Carroll County and its Sheriff Jerry Carver over a shooting incident that took place in Holmes County last spring.

Odessa Williams and Albert Coffee complain that deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff's office assaulted them while in Holmes County. According to the lawsuits, at least two deputies fired shots at Mr. Williams as he drove off, with 8 shots hitting his vehicle. They also held Mr. Coffee for over an hour without charges, threatened him, and then let him go, according to the court filing.

Two Carroll County deputies were arrested after the incident, and in July Curtis Alford and John Beck were indicted for a host of crimes including assault, obstruction of justice, conspiracy and kidnapping.
