ATMOS damage to street, sidewalks finally repaired

Monday, September 2, 2019, 8:10 pm News Flash Archive

Damage done by ATMOS to the sidewalks and street along the first three blocks of Cotton Street has finally been repaired, thanks to intervention by Mayor Carolyn McAdams and Victor Stokes, head of the city inspection department.

The damage took place when ATMOS dug up the sidewalks and street last winter while working on underground gas lines. The damage started at the corner of Cotton Street and River Road, and continued up the sidewalk until the 300 block of Cotton Street where Davis Elementary School stands.

ATMOS crews busted up the street and sidewalks during the line work, and then failed to properly repair the holes. The contractor that ATMOS had retained to repair the street and sidewalks tried to fill the holes with loose crushed granite rocks, but this left the areas unlevel and dangerous for pedestrians, with the rocks scattering out into the streets and yards.

The damage appears to have gone unnoticed by city workers until it was reported by a citizen to the Mayor in early June. McAdams put Victor Stokes onto the task of getting ATMOS to repair the damage.

According to Stokes, ATMOS readily admitted that there had been problems, and that the company had been forced to terminate its previous repair contractor due to unsatisfactory work.

By mid-August, all the repairs had finally been made by the new ATMOS repair contractor.

Here is a collection of "before" and "after" pictures documenting the repairs:

Kudos go to Mayor McAdams and Victor Stokes for getting these repairs made, at no expense to the city of Greenwood.
