Greenwood loses 6.6% of its population, 963 residents since 2020 Census

Friday, May 19, 2023, 6:15 pm News Flash Archive

The latest population estimates published this week by the United States Census Bureau show that the city of Greenwood has lost 6.6% of its population between July 2022 and the April 2020 census. The Census Bureau estimates the population of Greenwood has dropped to 13,541, down from 14,504 in 2020.

The new figures indicate an acceleration in population losses compared to the 2010-2020 decade.

For example, from 2010 to 2020, Greenwood lost 9.9% of its population per the census. Now, that loss rate is 6.6% in just two years.

Leflore County has lost an estimated 6.3% population in the two year period, compared to 12.3% in the previous decade.

Carroll County has lost an estimated 2.6% population in the same two year period, compared to 5.7% in the previous decade.

The state of Mississippi lost .2% population in the 2010-2020 census decade, but for the period 2020-2022, it lost .7% population.

The population estimate data for Greenwood and selected surrounding towns and cities is set forth below:

The population estimates are based upon the 2020 census figures, statistically extrapolated using various surveys and other data inputs that are constantly collected by the Department of Commerce and the Census Bureau. Each year, the population estimates since 2010 are revised to include the latest data collected.

Population estimates are calculated as of July of each year, while the 2020 Census figures were compiled as of April 2020. It takes almost a year for the Census Bureau to collect the data and publish it, so the July 2023 data won't be available until late spring 2024.
