The 2% sales tax increase requested by the Greenwood City Council to be imposed on local motels died in the House Local and Private Legislation committee yesterday.
The tax increase would have gone to the Greenwood Convention and Visitors Bureau, which already gets a 1% sales tax on all motels and restaurants to fund its activities. The sales tax on motels would have risen to a total of 3% under the legislation.
The Mayor and City Council had requested that the legislature authorize Greenwood to hold a special election to authorize the levying of the additional 2% sales tax.
State Representative Karl Oliver filed the bill, which was referred to the Local and Private Legislation committee.
The committee took no action on the bill, and it died when the House adjourned for the year yesterday.
