At this afternoon's organizational meeting of the Leflore County Board of Supervisors, the supervisors voted to appoint Tax Assessor Leroy Ware as the county administrator, removing Johnny Gary from that post.
Gary continues to serve as Chancery Clerk and Board Clerk.
District 1 supervisor Sam Abraham cast the lone dissenting vote, but did not provide the public with any reason for it.
Gary has been county administrator for the past four years, but his service has been plagued by controversy. There have been many issues regarding the budget and lack of adherence to it, some of the blame being placed on Mr. Gary.
At least twice, Mr. Abraham made motions to remove Gary as county administrator, but his motions always failed.
Tax Assessor Leroy Ware will serve as county administrator until a new county administrator can be selected. The board voted to advertise for that position, but no time frame was specified.
In addition, compensation was not provided to Mr. Ware, but he said that was fine with him.
At the same meeting, Mr. Abraham tried and failed to remove Mr. Gary as county comptroller, but he was reappointed to serve in that capacity by the board.
The board also set a special election for circuit clerk to take place at the general election on November 5, 2024. Meanwhile, Kelly Roberts will continue to serve until her replacement is elected.
Willis Engineering was reappointed as the county engineer.
