This morning, Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith was arrested on charges filed by Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood for giving legal advice to criminal defendants.

The affidavit outlining the charges may be viewed here: Affidavit re: Charge on Robert Shuler Smith

The affidavit claims that DA Smith, working with Dennis Sweet III, a criminal defense attorney, counseled criminal defendants how to beat the charges lodged against them.

In another case, DA Smith provided written thoughts to another defense attorney how his criminal defendant client could beat the charges filed against him by the state.

In another case, DA Smith is accused of using a grand jury to pressure a circuit judge to dismiss marijuana charges against a criminal defendant.
