Police abuse victim barred from disciplinary hearing

Tuesday, May 12, 2015, 12:53 pm News Flash Archive

At 10 o'clock this morning, the Greenwood Police Department held a disciplinary hearing for Lt. Randy Powell.

The victim of Powell's misconduct, Jelani Barr, was not permitted to attend the hearing, and the public and press were also excluded.

The victim was given no official notice of the place or time of the meeting, but when he attempted to attend the meeting (after the hearing's date had been reported in the Greenwood Commonwealth) at the police department this morning, he was told that he was not permitted to attend the meeting.

Barr was also not called to testify about the misconduct he suffered at Powell's hand.

Powell is the subject of an police department internal affairs investigation because of his arrest of Mr. Barr on the evening of April 7th. Powell made false statements about Barr, claiming he had refused to leave the scene of an investigation when ordered to do so.

But video that was published by Barr proved that he complied promptly with Powell's illegal order to leave, and that the interaction with Powell took no longer than 15 seconds.

Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore repeated Powell's false statements about Barr to the Greenwood Commonwealth on April 8th. He has not, to this point, retracted the lies that were told by the police regarding their arrest of Mr. Barr.
